A note from the administrator.

I have had to close the forum to new members. Registration is shut. I'm sorry for it - but I can no longer vouch for who comes through the door.

You may also find that certain older topics are no longer where you left them. I have, with great reluctance, removed a small number of threads and posts from this forum. I did so at the written request of a firm of solicitors acting for the landowner, who hold that the material touched on matters they would prefer were not aired in public.

I have complied, because I am one man and they are not. I want it set down plainly, here, that I did so under protest, and that I do not accept the grounds. Nothing removed was untrue. Nothing removed was anyone's business to suppress.

But I will not delete this board. What is left here stays, and you may read it for as long as I can keep the lights on. I have locked the doors; I have not burned the house. I have kept copies of everything. I would ask, gently, that those of you who hold anything of your own do the same.

<t>That is a genuinely odd description, Mick, and I say that as someone who wants a dull answer here. A recorder dropping to true silence without a fault, keeping its clock, is not a flat battery and not a full card, both of which leave their own marks on the file. Wind and owl stopping together for...

<t>Not me last night, I was clouded out. For the record skyquakes are a genuine documented puzzle, Sam, your husband is not daft. Most are explained eventually: sonic booms, meteors entering low, mine blasting, gas release, military. A few are not. The honest position is that the sky and the ground ...

<t>All fair, Mark, and the airfield is the likeliest, except the local one closed to fixed-wing a while back, which is exactly the sort of fact that makes me keep the entry open rather than closed. I am not claiming anything. I am refusing to write down an explanation I do not actually have, which i...

Odd lights over the down last night - anyone else?

<t>Genuine query, not a UFO post, or not meant as one. I was set up with the scope on the down last night, clear sky, and twice saw a light low over the fields to the north-east that I cannot file. Orange-white, the size of a bright planet but moving slowly and level, no nav lights, no sound; it did...

<t>For what it is worth from the dull empirical corner: I am up on the downs at night more than most, with the telescope, and I have twice seen the small lights people associate with the formations. Low, orange-white, moving over a field without sound and then simply not there. I logged them as airc...

Hello, amateur astronomer

<t>Ron. I keep a small observatory at the bottom of the garden and fight a losing war against light pollution. Meteors, the odd satellite, things people report in the night sky that turn out to be Venus nine times in ten. I log what I cannot name, which is rarer than you'd think but does happen. Ple...
