A note from the administrator.
I have had to close the forum to new members. Registration is shut. I'm sorry for it - but I can no longer vouch for who comes through the door.
You may also find that certain older topics are no longer where you left them. I have, with great reluctance, removed a small number of threads and posts from this forum. I did so at the written request of a firm of solicitors acting for the landowner, who hold that the material touched on matters they would prefer were not aired in public.
I have complied, because I am one man and they are not. I want it set down plainly, here, that I did so under protest, and that I do not accept the grounds. Nothing removed was untrue. Nothing removed was anyone's business to suppress.
But I will not delete this board. What is left here stays, and you may read it for as long as I can keep the lights on. I have locked the doors; I have not burned the house. I have kept copies of everything. I would ask, gently, that those of you who hold anything of your own do the same.

<t>I did not see it but it does not surprise me; that quarter of the down has always been one of the lively ones, the rods are busy out that way. There are old names for them too: will of the wisp, the lantern men, corpse candles. Every age has seen them and called them after its own fears. I do not...

<t>I walked that towpath with the rods once, Mick, after you mentioned it on the walk, and I do not mind telling you they crossed hard, right at the spot Pat means, and stayed crossed for a good ten yards. I make no claims about what it is. Water, the old course of something, a grief in the ground, ...

<t>I will only say that the still cold nights are when the ground is most awake, in my experience, and that you are right it comes from below and not from a direction. I do not call it a pump. But I would not argue with Geoff, who knows more than I do, only note that the animals going quiet is the p...

<t>That is the kindest any of you have ever been to me and I shall treasure it. Mark calling it real with no magic, and Col keeping a respectful silence, that is all I have ever asked for. I do not need it to be magic. I only need you to stop pretending the ground is the same all over when your own ...

Dowsing the field - what the rods actually do
<t>Since I am always being teased on here, let me set out what dowsing actually is for me, and you may laugh, I am well used to it. You hold two L-shaped rods loosely, you walk, and over certain things they cross or swing: water mostly, old pipes, the line of a filled ditch, sometimes the foundation...

The rods and the ridgeway
<t>Hello. Doreen. I have dowsed this country since 1978 and I will not be talked out of what the rods do, though I have stopped expecting to talk anyone into it. I find water and I find old ground, and I keep my own counsel about how. I dare say I shall be debunked cheerfully and often. I don't mind...
