A note from the administrator.
I have had to close the forum to new members. Registration is shut. I'm sorry for it - but I can no longer vouch for who comes through the door.
You may also find that certain older topics are no longer where you left them. I have, with great reluctance, removed a small number of threads and posts from this forum. I did so at the written request of a firm of solicitors acting for the landowner, who hold that the material touched on matters they would prefer were not aired in public.
I have complied, because I am one man and they are not. I want it set down plainly, here, that I did so under protest, and that I do not accept the grounds. Nothing removed was untrue. Nothing removed was anyone's business to suppress.
But I will not delete this board. What is left here stays, and you may read it for as long as I can keep the lights on. I have locked the doors; I have not burned the house. I have kept copies of everything. I would ask, gently, that those of you who hold anything of your own do the same.

<t>I have messaged her too, Anne, twice, and the same, nothing. I have told myself a dozen ordinary reasons, her health, the time of year, the wretched computer her grandson set up that she never trusted. Any of them could be it. I will only say that Nan was the one who first put words to the feelin...

<t>Soppy is allowed in the Snug, Nan, it is in the rules, or it ought to be. Twenty years, Pat. Whatever else changes, and things are changing, we built something here that was worth building. A place where people were kind to each other about quinces and herons and old grief. That is not a small th...

<t>Has anyone been able to raise Len? His thread is not where it was, I cannot find it from the board index, and when I go to his name to message him it tells me the user does not exist. Not that he has left, that he does not exist. I have his posts quoted in two of my own and even those have gone b...

<t>Len, this is careful work and I can see the hours in it. I am not sure I would have put it all in one place quite so plainly, if I am honest, it makes a picture that a scattering of separate threads does not. But you have asked good questions and dated everything properly, which is more than most...

<t>Bran, I am usually the first to roll my eyes, and I find I cannot this time. Whether it is one hand, or a hundred separate buyers who all happen to want the same odd thing, the result is the same: the small sacred places of this country are passing, quietly and lawfully, into the keeping of peopl...

They buy up the special bits, everywhere
<t>I have been turning something over and I want to set it down, because I think it is bigger than our own patch. We all know some firm has been quietly buying the odd ground round here for years, the cottages, the land out by the old ruin, the corners with a stone or a barrow on them. What I have c...

Locked out of the manor
<t>A small thing, but it saddened me more than it should. I had arranged to take a few of the society out to the vanished-village site, the old manor ruin and the standing stones Miss Dunch first walked us through years ago, permission sought the proper way, well in advance. My letters went unanswer...

<t>I wrote to ask whether the society might see the manor ruin while there was activity out there, thinking someone must be on site to ask. No reply, of course. There never is. One grows used to a landowner who simply does not answer letters, but it is a new thing in my experience to be unable to fi...

<t>He mattered, Nan, more than he ever once believed. His drove names are in the society record now, every one of them, attributed to George exactly as I promised him. They will outlast all of us. That is not nothing, and it is largely down to you for badgering him into writing them down. He would n...
